References. The reference does not need to be written by the head teacher or head of sixth form; it is more important that it is written by someone who knows the student well enough to comment on their academic abilities and any personal qualities that will help them to succeed.

They can be useful for identifying a series of personal qualities that would make the student suitable for an Oxbridge education; comments on these qualities should be as specific and evidence-based as possible.

If the worker thinks they’ve been given an unfair or misleading reference, they may be able to claim damages in a court. The previous employer must be able to back up the reference, such as by supplying examples of warning letters. Workers must be able to show that: it’s misleading or inaccurate.
