19 oCTOBER 2022. If you have visited recently then you will have noticed that our water isn’t its usual turquoise colour. The heat wave with its unusually high temperatures and extremely high UV levels in August has caused an algae bloom – which although not harmful at all, does make the lake look decidedly green!
Why is the water at The Wave green?
The wave is trying to be green – sustainable- unfortunately the only green things are the water, which is full of green algae, which makes the concrete pool floor and boards slippery.
Is the wave Bristol fresh water?
Saltwater, if you didn’t know, is more buoyant than fresh water, the wave Bristol uses freshwater at its lagoon.
Can you swim at the wave Bristol?
We do not currently offer any water-based activities except surfing and bodyboarding at The Wave.
Is the water at the wave Bristol chlorinated?
The water at The Wave is using chlorine, ozone and UV. For those who don’t fancy a surf, spectators passes can be booked at a cost of £2. The Wave is an all-year-round facility and in the summer you can surf until sunset. The centre also offers lessons for adaptive surfers, making the experience fully inclusive to all.
How deep is The Wave Bristol?
The planned dimensions of the pool are 300 metres (980 ft) long by 100 metres (330 ft) wide and 1.5 metres (4 ft 11 in) deep. The firm plans to host a High-Performance Surfing Centre and surf contests.
Do you have to wear a wetsuit at The Wave?
For beginners, wetsuits and helmets are compulsory for safety reasons – these and surf boards are provided in the cost of your lesson. Advanced and intermediate surfers are allowed to wear board shorts, along with one of our rash vests, in the warmer summer months.
Is The Wave in Bristol heated?
Our lake isn’t heated, you can check our water temperature on the website. Rest assured, if you’re coming during the Winter or on a cold day, we provide you with a really warm and thick winter wetsuit plus optional gloves, hood and boots so you won’t get cold.

Does the wave Bristol close in winter?
Our opening times change depending on the time of year. Typically we are open from sunrise to sunset. Please note that during the winter months, we are open from Thursdays to Sundays excluding school holidays.
Can you wear goggles at The Wave?
Notes for the following: Nose Goggles – goggles that cover the nose are not permitted due to health and safety. Glasses – not permitted. Cover up any offensive tattoos.
Is The Wave chlorinated?
The lake uses six million litres of water (A high-tech on-site water treatment plant keeps waters clear and clean. This involves filtration, UV treatment and a very small dose of chlorine to bring it up to drinking water quality). The Wave will employee between 95 and 100 people.
How difficult is the hike to The Wave?
Difficulty. The Wave hike is moderate in difficulty. The trail is 3 miles one-way in wilderness land. It’s also a low trafficked trail so you won’t see a distinct path part of the way unless there is sand or dirt.
Is water in Bristol drinkable?

Do you wear undies in a wetsuit?
Many people actually prefer to go commando under their wetsuits, but it’s all a matter of preference. If you plan to rent the suit, however, you’re probably going to want to wear something underneath. For colder temperatures, adding layers underneath the suit is definitely the way to go.
Why don t wetsuits zip up at the front?
The back zip makes the opening very wide, so you can quickly get in without any wriggling or making awkward positions. Since they are easy to get into, it is much less likely to hurt yourself while putting them on (Weird arm and leg positions can cause sprains and cramps).
