Is York a flat racecourse?
York is one of the premier Flat racecourses in Britain with a rich history. It is the third biggest racecourse in terms of prize-money offered and second behind Ascot in prize-money offered per meeting.
Is York flat or jumps?
Left handed, flat. In essence, York is a very fair track, ideal for the long-striding galloper. In recent seasons, the field tends to come more down the centre of the track than has historically been the case, particularly if conditions are testing.

Do any jockeys ride flat and jumps?
Horses can readily switch between Flat and Jump racing, particularly Hurdling, whilst a handful of jockeys currently ride under both codes. Most Flat horses cease Flat racing when 6 or 7, but many Jump horses are still racing at the age of 12.
Are York races good?
Overall a great day at the races, excellent racing, facilities were perfect and the weather was great too. Other racecourses should look at what York is doing, as this would be their busiest day of the season. We all felt it was excellent value for money & we had a very enjoyable day.
Is York a front runners track?
Because they can start racing from a long way out at York, which is a big galloping track, sometimes the last one to challenge has an advantage. Some people think it suits front-runners, but more often than not the one in the lead will get picked off at around the 1f marker.
It is situated on an expanse of ground which has been known since pre-medieval times as the Knavesmire, from the Anglo-Saxon “knave” meaning a man of low standing, and “mire” meaning a swampy pasture for cattle. For this reason, the racecourse is still sometimes referred to as “The Knavesmire”.

Although far from compulsory in all enclosures, smart dress is the accepted dress code for racegoers. Trainers and shorts are widely regarded as unacceptable, although not forbidden in some enclosures or at some meetings. The classic Flat racing attire for men is a collared shirt with trousers and smart shoes.
