Dogs are welcome on all our trains except Dining trains and some Special Events (see individual event pages for restrictions) provided they are kept off the seats and tables. A dog ticket is £3.00 (Free if you are a Member) and have the same validity as the owner’s ticket.
Can you take dogs on the Pickering to Whitby steam train?
One great day out to be had with your dog is a trip on a steam train from Pickering to the popular seaside town of Whitby, the trains are dog friendly (except for the dining trains) but there is a small charge for your pooch to travel.

The Wensleydale Railway is an authentic Heritage Railway running from Leeming bar in the Vale of Mowbray to Redmire in the spectacular Yorkshire Dales. Dogs are very welcome to join their families on the railway.

Can dogs go in the arcades at Whitby?
Only 1 of the amusement arcades had a no dogs sign up when I passed this morning. I stay in Scarborough with my dog often. Both Scarborough and whitby are dog friendly. At Whitby Abbey dogs are allowed in the visitor centre but not the cafe.

Only guide dogs and assistance dogs are allowed in the Centre. We have over 50 acres of outside space which our four-legged friends are welcome to enjoy provided they are kept on a lead.
Can my dog sit on a train seat?
Keep your dog on a lead throughout your journey. Enclosed pet carriers or crates must be used for dogs not on a lead. Any pet carrier must be rigid and not open (to prevent escape) and the dog must be able to stand and lie down in comfort. Dogs are not allowed to occupy seats.

Is Bluebell Railway dog friendly?
Yes, dogs are welcome at the Bluebell Railway on our standard travel services. During Special Events there may be some restrictions, so please check before travelling.
Can I take my dog on Northern trains?
Yes, your well-behaved dog is welcome on Northern trains, however, do double check when booking your ticket. Northern can refuse to accept your dog, under the railway bylaws.
Can dogs sit on train seats UK?
There are a few rules that you’ll need to abide by as per the National Rail Conditions of Travel: Dogs cannot occupy train seats. Dogs must be kept on a lead throughout the entire journey and when at stations, unless they’re in a pet carrier.
How much does it cost to travel with your dog in train?
A dog carried in a dog box is charged at luggage rates applicable to the train at 30 kg per pet dog. Dogs can also be carried in AC first class and first class at luggage rate for 60 kg per dog. Keep in mind that they are not allowed in AC2 tier, AC3 tier, AC chair car, sleeper class and second class compartments.
Can you take dogs on the Ffestiniog Railway?
Dogs are welcome in the 3rd Class portions of our trains. A standard fare of £3.00 per dog applies. We regret that dogs (except assistance dogs) are not allowed in 1st class. Guide/Assistance dogs travel free of charge and are welcome in all our station buildings and carriages.
Is GWR dog friendly?
If you’d like to travel with your pet, we’re happy for you to do so. Please keep dogs on a lead. Other small domestic animals must always travel in a fully enclosed carrier that does not exceed 85 x 60 x 60 cm. You can take up to two animals free of charge.

Where can dogs go in Whitby?
Whitby has beaches on both sides of the River Esk. On the east side is the smaller Tate Hill, a sheltered sandy beach that allows dogs all year round. On the other side of West Pier is West Cliff, a larger sandy beach with colourful beach huts, deckchair and windbreak hire, a children’s paddling pool and donkey rides.
Can you take dogs into York Minster?
York Minster is also a must-see. And although dogs aren’t allowed inside the magnificent cathedral, it can easily be admired from afar because it towers over the city. The same can be said for the ancient City Walls, which encircle the heart of York.
Can you take dogs on buses Yorkshire?
One dog is permitted on either the lower or upper deck of a bus at any one time, but this will be subject to the discretion of the driver. Similarly, if you wish to travel with two or more dogs, you will need permission from the driver.
