Re: Races – good time to visit York? If you’re already in York then I’d expect you’ll notice it’s busier than other days, particularly in the evening after the races finish. If you’re trying to get to York that day prepare for the traffic to be busy if you’re approaching from the racecourse side of town!

Can I wear jeans to the races?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable. During the regular work week, most people at the races have on jeans and t-shirts. If you’re going on a big race day and don’t want to dress up, stick with a comfortable pair of pants and polo shirt. That goes for ladies and gentlemen.
Can you wear jeans to York races?
Whilst no formal restriction on wearing jeans and trainers, these are rarely seen in the County Stand. In a similar vein, whilst we encourage a sense of style in the County Stand, if gentlemen believe the weather warrants shorts then there is no formal restriction to them being worn.
What time do the gates open at York races?
The event is a combined racing and music ticket, racegoers are required to be at the racecourse by the time of the last race. We hope you arrive for the first race on each day and so enjoy the full experience. Gates open at 11.15am on both of the Saturdays and 4pm on Friday 27 July.
What time should I arrive at the race?
We suggest arriving 1.5-2 hours prior to your scheduled start time. This way, any traffic issues or other unforeseen circumstances will only be a pleasant obstacle on the way to much more difficult ones.
What time should I get to a race?
Arrive early.
Get to the race at least one hour before the start so you’ll have time to pick up your number (if you don’t already have it), use the porta-potty, and warm up. You don’t want to be running to the starting line.
