Can you wear jeans to York races?
Whilst no formal restriction on wearing jeans and trainers, these are rarely seen in the County Stand. In a similar vein, whilst we encourage a sense of style in the County Stand, if gentlemen believe the weather warrants shorts then there is no formal restriction to them being worn.

Can you wear flats to the races?
You will be on your feet all day, so wear shoes you can handle and feel comfortable in. . Sneaky flats are always a good idea: don’t walk around barefoot at the end of the day. Instead, pack a cute pair of flats that you can easily slip on if or when the heels become too much.
Can you take beer into York races?
Picnics are welcome in Clocktower Enclosure and alcohol for your own consumption is permitted, please no glass, BBQ’s or gazebo’s.
Is there a dress code at York races?
The Grandstand and Paddock has no formal dress code and feel free to dress as you wish and feel comfortable. However, taking a lead from the County Stand dress code, many of our racegoers in this enclosure do like to use a day at the races as an excuse to get glammed up.
Is York Racecourse turf?

Runners drawn very high and very low struggle in big-field sprints here, but the biggest draw bias lies over 1m2f85yds, where any runner drawn high in a big field faces a near-impossible task. Concentrate on the bottom seven stalls over 1m2f85yds in races with more than fourteen runners.
Do you need cash at York races?
The Tote has a minimum bet of just £2 and accepts cash and card across all courses making it one of the most convenient ways to place a bet on-course. Betting with the Tote at on-course supports racing, most of the revenue taken here at York flowing back to our racecourse.
Can you wear trainers to the races?
Although far from compulsory in all enclosures, smart dress is the accepted dress code for racegoers. Trainers and shorts are widely regarded as unacceptable, although not forbidden in some enclosures or at some meetings. The classic Flat racing attire for men is a collared shirt with trousers and smart shoes.
Can you drink outside at York races?
Please note- the admission of food and drinks is not permitted around the Parade Ring and on the County Stand Lawn. This is to preserve the areas for racing viewing. Racegoers in County Stand can take advantage of the variety of bars and lawns outlined above, as well as Grandstand and Paddock areas.

What do ladies wear to races?
Wear anything casual like denim, sportswear, untailored pants and jackets, leggings, sneakers or thongs (shoes that go between the first two toes). Show too much skin – bare midriffs (including cut-outs) are a no-no, as are strapless dresses or spaghetti straps in members’ areas. Avoid shorts and short playsuits.
What shoes can I wear to the races?
Footwear to the races needs a lot of thought, your shoes need to be comfortable to walk around in as you do a lot of walking but also need to look smart. For women, we would advise footwear such as wedges and for men, we would advise loafers or derbies.
Do racing flats make you faster?
Racing shoes will allow you to run faster, but they won’t make you run faster. Research shows that for every ounce that you shave off the weight of a training shoe, you will run one second per mile faster.
Can I wear jeans to the races?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable. During the regular work week, most people at the races have on jeans and t-shirts. If you’re going on a big race day and don’t want to dress up, stick with a comfortable pair of pants and polo shirt. That goes for ladies and gentlemen.

York turns out to be good value for food and drink. It offers the cheapest bottle of wine – at £5 it is nearly £4 cheaper than the most expensive cities (Oxford and Cambridge at £8.90) and 40p cheaper than the next best value city (Liverpool at £5.40).
