National Rail is the overarching national body, Southern is the company that runs the train, and Trainline is just a commercial reseller. So whether you go through National Rail or Southern’s site makes no difference – you will end up buying the ticket from Southern.

What happens if I travel out of my Travelcard Zone?
You will have been charged an extension fare, taken from your pay as you go balance. If you didn’t have any pay as you go credit on your Oyster card, your balance will be negative and you will need to top up your card before you can travel again – even if you have a valid Travelcard.
What is the difference between an Oyster card and a Travelcard?
Travelcards are a flat rate pass where you have unlimited rides for the time period purchased. Oyster / Contactless payment cards are charged on a per journey basis but has a daily maximum you can be charged.
Is it better to use contactless or Travelcard?

Can I use my train ticket on any train?
You can only take the train that you have reserved i.e. the one which you have been issued a ticket for. If you wish to depart earlier or later, you can exchange your ticket or cancel it and re-book it, depending on the fare conditions. Once you have done this, you can then choose a new departure time for your ticket.
