NEWPORT NEWS — The origin of the “News” is a mystery, but the “Newport” is not – historians agree that this city was named in honor of Capt. Christopher Newport. In 1607, Newport was commander of the Susan Constant, the flagship of the English fleet that landed in Jamestown.
