Thor’s Cave walk This short loop is only 2.5km and well suited to families and people with dogs. The walk takes you through sweeping fields through a gate into a small, wooded glade, before ascending a steep valley slope; made “easier” by the 198 steps up to Thor’s cave.

This walk takes hikers to one of the Peak District’s most Iconic landmarks, Thor’s Cave. Walkers should allow around 3 hours to complete the hike, which takes place on a mixture of paths and open ground. The Car Park at Wetton North East of Milldale is the start point for this walk.

Starting from Wetton Car Park, this 3.8-mile route takes you to Thor’s Cave Peak District and then along the Manifold Way to Wetton Mill. From there, you’ll walk around Wetton Hill before heading back to the village.

If you didn’t want an extensive hike or complicated walk, there is an easy Thor’s Cave route. You simply park near to the Manifold Way which is a flat walking and cycling trail.
Are there toilets at Thors cave?
There are numerous flights of steep wooden stairs leading to Thor’s Cave, and this walk may become slick in rainy weather. At the start of the trip, there are public restrooms, and at Wetton Mill, where you may also get some food and drink if you need it (check opening times).

Why is it called Thor’s cave?
Nevertheless, the cave was in use in Anglo-Saxon times with Early Medieval artefacts uncovered there. The origin of the name possibly lies in the word ‘tor’ from the Old Welsh word for a high rock or tower (ultimately from the Latin turris). Other ideas link the cave to local folklore and tales of sprites and fairies.
