The canal was surveyed by William Jessop and James Green. It opened in 1796, 15 miles long with 20 locks – most of which were grouped into a flight at Wollaton. The geography of the waterways in central Nottingham was, and is, complex.

Where does the Erewash Canal start and finish?
The Erewash Canal runs from the River Trent and the Soar Navigation at Trent Lock to Langley Mill where it joins the now derelict Nottingham Canal and Cromford Canal (under restoration).

How far can I travel? During the summer months you can expect to cruise for anywhere between four and seven hours a day. Travelling at 3-4mph for four hours a day will mean you cover around 80 to 100 miles in a week.
