Sites at Otaio River Gorge, Opihi River at Saleyards Bridge and Waipopo Huts, are all suitable for swimming. All other monitored river sites in South Canterbury are suitable for swimming except for the Black Hole on the Waihao River.
Can you swim in Canterbury?
On Canterbury’s coast, you can go swimming, surfing, jet boating, rafting, fishing, and more. Inland, you can try your luck at hiking or mountain biking up the highest mountain in New Zealand, Aoraki/Mount Cook, before cooling off in a forested lake or river.

Can you swim at Ashley Gorge?
Access to the site is through the Ashley Gorge Camp ground on the south side of the bridge. A track leds down to a gravel riverbed and numerous pools for swimmining and fishing and shallow areas surrounded by native bush. The river can be deep and swift in places and is very popular with all recreational users.
