We want everyone to enjoy the water safely. Regular, supervised open water swimming sessions can be booked through the Salford Watersports Centre. Wetsuits can be hired and there are safety measures in place to monitor water quality and to protect swimmers.

The isolation of some 20 ha of enclosed water created what is known today as Salford Quays. Being deep and still waterbodies, the enclosed dock basins remained susceptible to stratification, as are similarly shaped natural waterbodies (e.g., Moss 1980; Horne & Goldman 1994).

A floating artwork of Earth created to highlight environmental issues has been deflated after bad weather struck. The illuminated feature, which went on show in Salford Quays for the Lightwaves 2021 festival, was switched off to prevent damage from high winds.

Are you allowed to swim at Sale Water Park?
Swimming in Sale Water Park is only permitted at specified sessions. Unauthorised use of the facility is not permitted at any other time. All swimmers MUST complete the health disclosure form before their first swim and sign the register before every swim.
Why did Salford Quays go into decline?
Having grown to be the third busiest port in Britain, the docks began to decline in the 1970s due to the introduction of larger container ships which the docks could not accommodate.
Why is it called Salford Quays?
In 1983, Salford City Council acquired parts of the docks covering 220 acres (90 ha) from the Manchester Ship Canal Company with the aid of a derelict land grant. The area was rebranded as Salford Quays and redevelopment by Urban Waterside began in 1985 under the Salford Quays Development Plan.
