York is widely regarded as the best Flat racecourse in the North, while some would extend that to include the whole of the British Isles.
Is York races a good day out?
Overall a great day at the races, excellent racing, facilities were perfect and the weather was great too. Other racecourses should look at what York is doing, as this would be their busiest day of the season. We all felt it was excellent value for money & we had a very enjoyable day.
Do you get searched at York races?
You will notice some things on arrival, notably an enhanced bag search, so to speed your entry and that of others, please plan to “travel light”. Please do not bring unnecessary bags or luggage into the racecourse. Luggage storage facilities will be provided outside of the course enclosures.
Is York busy when the races are on?
Re: Races – good time to visit York? If you’re already in York then I’d expect you’ll notice it’s busier than other days, particularly in the evening after the races finish. If you’re trying to get to York that day prepare for the traffic to be busy if you’re approaching from the racecourse side of town!

York is one of the premier Flat racecourses in Britain with a rich history. It is the third biggest racecourse in terms of prize-money offered and second behind Ascot in prize-money offered per meeting.
Is there sniffer dogs at York races?
Working alongside North Yorkshire Police, the presence of sniffer dogs, bag searches, participation in the Pace Yourself Plus initiative, as well as monitoring of toilets, are all accepted as positive steps in addressing this challenge for wider society.
Can you wear jeans at York races?
Whilst no formal restriction on wearing jeans and trainers, these are rarely seen in the County Stand. In a similar vein, whilst we encourage a sense of style in the County Stand, if gentlemen believe the weather warrants shorts then there is no formal restriction to them being worn.
What do ladies wear at York races?

Short sleeved shirts, bow ties, cravats and dress shorts are all also accepted within the dress code. There is no formal dress code for ladies, however most choose to dress up for a day at the races – think wedding guest attire.
Can I wear jeans to the races?
Wear whatever makes you comfortable. During the regular work week, most people at the races have on jeans and t-shirts. If you’re going on a big race day and don’t want to dress up, stick with a comfortable pair of pants and polo shirt.

The Tote has a minimum bet of just £2 and accepts cash and card across all courses making it one of the most convenient ways to place a bet on-course. Betting with the Tote at on-course supports racing, most of the revenue taken here at York flowing back to our racecourse.

Runners drawn very high and very low struggle in big-field sprints here, but the biggest draw bias lies over 1m2f85yds, where any runner drawn high in a big field faces a near-impossible task. Concentrate on the bottom seven stalls over 1m2f85yds in races with more than fourteen runners.
How long do York races last?
The first race normally starts between 1.30pm and 2pm and from this time onwards the raceday can take the form of 6 or 7 half-hour cycles around each race.
Is York Marathon Hilly?
The centre of York and the surrounding countryside form the marathon route sand there is a good PB potential as the course is pretty flat with no steep climbs. The course is fast and flat with an elevation gain of around 62m, compared to that of Manchester marathon which is 54m. The race operates a 7 hour cut off time.
Do racing flats make you faster?

Smart tailored shorts are acceptable in the warm weather. However, trainers, ripped, torn or light denim jeans, cargo shorts, t-shirts, fancy dress, sportswear or swimwear and unduly casual attire is not accepted as appropriate dress in the Premier Enclosure, Champions Lawn or shared or private Hospitality.
Can under 18s go to York races?

The County Stand
The County Stand – the premier stand, badges to the county stand allow you access to all other enclosures, including food and drink. There is a formal dress code for men, and it gives you great views of the races and access to the main betting ring.
