Barbican & Community Libraries is the name for the City of London’s public lending libraries. They are free to join to anybody who lives, works or studies or is a regular visitor to the City of London.
Can anyone enter The London Library?
Members are welcome to introduce prospective members to the Library, or to bring a visitor for a short tour of the Library. For fire and security purposes all visitors must sign in at Reception and must remain with the member at all times.

Full Individual membership of The London Library is the complete way to enjoy and make the most of everything that this literary haven has to offer, including our outstanding book collection, our extensive online resources, our beautiful work spaces and more. Can you just walk into British Library?
Everyone is welcome to visit our exhibition galleries and public spaces. To use the Reading Rooms at St Pancras and Boston Spa you will need to register for a Reader Pass.

Do you need tickets for the British Library in London?

But today, we’re onto free quiet study spaces in London, and those will include some very famous libraries like the British Library and the Southbank Centre, as well as some really underrated libraries in London, like the Central Library in Islington, the Coombes Croft Library, and Wood Green Library.
Can I study in The London Library?
Yes. If you have a Reader Pass you can study at the British Library, even if you’re not using any collection items. Just show your Reader Pass at the Reading Room security desk as you enter. You can also choose which of the Reading Rooms to use, unless you are combining your study time with using collection items.

They are not free. Most taxpayers do not understand how much public libraries pay in order to provide services. Paper books can be cheap, as can DVDs, but databases and eBooks are very expensive and are becoming increasingly more expensive.
How do you get into the London Library?
Please remember, booking is essential in order to visit the Library and browse the stacks or use the reading rooms. Members will not be permitted beyond the Issue Hall without having a pre-booked day pass.

How do I get a UK library card?
You must bring identification with your name and address on it such as a driving licence, bank statement or recent utility bill. There is a charge of £1.20 for replacing lost or damaged library cards.

When did libraries become free UK?
In 1845, William Ewart’s Museums Act provided the first opportunity for local authorities to provide ‘free’ libraries, albeit in or as annexes to buildings ostensibly designed for a different purpose; Canterbury, Warrington and Salford each exploited the Act to attach free libraries to local museums.
