Do you tap in and out on London trams?
Always touch in on a yellow card reader at the start of your journey and touch out at the end to pay the right fare. (On a bus or tram you only need to touch in.)
Do you need to tap off on trams?
You don’t need to touch off. If you’re just travelling in the city’s Free Tram Zone, don’t touch on or off. If you’re just travelling in Zone 2, touch on and off for a cheaper fare.
Can I use my debit card on the tram?
Ticket machines are located at each tram stop. Simply follow the instructions on the touch screen and pay by either cash, card, Apple pay or Google pay.
Do you have to tap in and out of the tram stop?

When changing trains you may need to touch your card on a PINK reader, and if you are travelling on a bus or tram you only have to touch in. If you don’t touch in and out on every journey you make we don’t know where you have travelled, so we can’t charge the right fare.
What happens if you forget to tap out London?
Please wait at least 48 hours as you might receive an automatic refund: Oyster – we’ll automatically add it to your card the next time you touch in or out of a rail journey. Contactless – the refund will show on your next card statement, or we will adjust the fares charged when you next travel.
What happens if you tap in twice?
If you tap in at a station, you can’t pass your oyster card back to your mate behind, the system won’t accept two consecutive tap ins. However, it WILL accept them if the two are broken up by a tap out. So to discourage that, there’s a hefty fee involved with doing so.
Do I get charged if I tap in and out at the same station?
You can get a refund if you have been charged for touching in and out at the same station without making a journey.
Are London trams free?
When it comes to tickets, trams are treated as part of London’s bus network. The bus and tram network has a flat fare of £1.65 if you pay using an Oyster card or contactless payment card. Travelcards are valid on trams.
What happens if you forget to tap out at station?
If you do not tap out your Oyster card, you will be charged the maximum fare for that journey. This this because most fares are based on zone, distance and time of travel.

How many times can you use contactless before it asks for your PIN?
Card issuers only allow five consecutive contactless transactions that can be made before a PIN is requested in order to prevent fraud.
Is it cheaper to use contactless or Travelcard?
As a general rule a Travelcard is more expensive than an Oyster card or Contactless payment card. The exception is if you make 3 or more journeys for 6 days or more within a 7 day period. In this case a 7 day Travelcard works out cheaper than an Oyster or Contactless payment card.
Can you tap your debit card on the train?
Contactless pay as you go (PAYG)
Just touch your debit or credit card on a yellow card reader to pay for your journey, the same as you would with your Oyster card, and you won’t have to queue for tickets at the station and won’t have to top up. Always remember to touch in and out.
Do you tap on and off the train?
At the end of a journey you must ‘Touch-Off’ to ensure the correct fare is applied. If you don’t Touch-On you are committing fare evasion. If you don’t Touch-Off you will pay more.
What happens if you tap out with a different card?
What happens if I touch in with one contactless card, and touch out with another on the same journey? It’s important that you try to avoid doing this, as you’ll be charged a maximum fare on both of your cards. The two separate journeys won’t be linked and each one will be recognised as incomplete.
How much is the fine for not tapping out?
How much is a penalty fare? It’s £80. This is reduced to £40 if you pay within 21 days.
Can I just tap my card on London Underground?
If your bank card shows the contactless payment symbol, you can use it to pay as you go straight away. You’ll pay an adult rate fare. Many contactless cards issued outside the UK can be used to pay as you go for travel (overseas transaction fees may apply):
How much does TfL charge for not tapping out?
up to £8.90 in Zones 1-9. up to £26.00 beyond Zone 9, including on the Heathrow Express.
Can TfL inspectors check contactless?
TfL revenue inspectors can also check contactless payments cards, in addition to the Oyster cards.
Is tapping safer than swiping?
Contactless payments are much faster than inserting a credit card and safer than paying with cash or by means of magnetic stripe swipe.
