Parking here is FREE (for shoppers) for a maximum of 3 hours, which should cover our meeting with no problem at all. Please Note: Be sure not to overstay the 3 hours though as it is operated by an automated camera system.
Is Fountains Abbey the same as Bolton Abbey?
Bolton Abbey is much smaller and has less to see. If you have plenty of time then Fountains would get my vote every time. Definitely Fountains Abbey and the adjoining Studley Royal Water Gardens. Bolton Abbey is lovely and well worth visiting, but the Fountains Abbey is a league above in all counts.

Why are there no dogs in the Valley of Desolation?
Dogs are not permitted on Barden Moor and Barden Fell other than on the public rights of way which cross Barden Moor. Therefore, dogs cannot go up the Valley of Desolation and to Simon’s Seat. Grouse shooting will take place on Barden Moor and Barden Fell from 12th August to 14th December.
Why is it called Simon’s seat?
Simon’s Seat is a prominent outcrop of millstone grit, visible for many miles around and lying close to Bolton Abbey. The name is associated with a story concerning a baby found by a shepherd boy who was named Simon. Its summit is at 485m (1591 feet) and has a trig point surrounded by large gritstone boulders.
