Why is Chester Zoo so popular?
Chester was the first zoo in the UK to successfully breed Asian elephants in captivity. The most famous of these was Jubilee (1977–2003), so named as he was born in 1977, the year of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. You can easily spend a full day at the zoo, and when the rain is pouring there aren’t many places you can do that in the rain (we were there 10-3.30 on Sunday). There are plenty of indoor cafes to hide away from the rain if you need a break, and there are even inside picnic areas if you want to take your own food.

As you make your way through the forest and head towards the bat cave, you may be able to feel the air as they whoosh past you! But there’s no need to worry about them flying into you, bats are excellent navigators.
