Can you go inside Chester Castle?
The castle is only open during special events. Details of any events will be posted on the main web page in due course.
Are English Heritage sites free?
Many of the historic sites in our care are free to enter. You don’t need to book ahead, and most of them are open during daylight hours of every day of the year.
What is Chester Castle used for?
In the castle complex are the remaining parts of the medieval castle together with the neoclassical buildings designed by Thomas Harrison which were built between 1788 and 1813. Parts of the neoclassical buildings are used today by the Crown Court and as a military museum.
Does Chester have a castle?
Chester Castle was founded by William the Conqueror in 1070 and became the administrative centre of the earldom of Chester. The first earth and timber ‘motte-and-bailey’ castle probably only occupied the area of the inner bailey. In the 12th century it was rebuilt in stone and the outer bailey added.
Can you walk the Chester walls for free?

Several of the walls and buildings are Grade I or Grade II listed, so you have plenty of historical sights within a small area. Unfortunately you can only access the interior of Chester Castle through a paid guided tour. However, you can look at the castle from outside for free.
Do you have to pay to visit Chester Cathedral?
Entry is FREE to the Cathedral but donations are welcome. Groups are welcome by appointment and tours can be specially tailored to include coffee, tea or lunch to make a great day out for your organisation.
Can I use my National Trust membership at English Heritage sites?
Can I use my National Trust card for entry into English Heritage sites? No. The memberships are separate and being a member of one organisation will not gain you entry into the other.

National Trust covers all sites in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Heritage sites in Scotland are looked after by Historic Scotland, which is a similar charitable trust. What is this? However, you can still access these sites with your membership card for free.

Chester is the only city in Britain that retains the full circuit of its ancient defensive walls. Walking the complete circuit gives wondrous views down into the city and gives a fantastic insight into Chester’s long history.
How long is the wall walk in Chester?

Today almost every attraction that Chester has to offer the visitor can be viewed from the two mile circuit of these walls. Distance: This two mile walk takes about 45 minutes but will of course take longer if you stop to take photographs or divert to explore all the curious and historic sights visible from the walls.

Is Grosvenor Museum free?
Admission to the museum is free, however we welcome a suggested donation of £3 per person. The Grosvenor museum opened in 1886, built on land donated by the first Duke of Westminster.
Where do you park to walk Chester wall?
Access Point – Little Roodee Car Park (Racecourse)
There is a slight ramped pathway to gain access to the walls here, opposite Little Roodee car park on Grosvenor Road. This access point also provides information on the walls route.
How do you get to the Chester walls?
The main access onto the Walls is via four major gateways: Northgate, Eastgate, Watergate and Bridgegate. There are also many steps along the Walls, such as Recorder’s Steps, some having accessible ramps; plus a number of towers, including Water Tower, Phoenix Tower, and Bonewaldesthorne’s Tower.
Is Chester Zoo walk around?
Is it far to walk around the zoo? We have 11 miles of pathway in total, winding around all the different animals and habitats.
Do you have to pay to go to Chester Zoo?
You can pre-book your tickets here. Or purchase your tickets on the day at our Ticket Windows. If you have a pre-paid ticket, such as an adopter ticket or open dated ticket, then you don’t need to book. Just bring your prepaid ticket with you on the day.
Do you have to pay to go into Cologne Cathedral?
The Cologne Cathedral is open every day of the year, from 6 am to 8 pm. And like the vast majority of temples in Europe, admission to the monument is free. The only spaces that require a paid ticket are the Treasury and the South Tower.
