What counts as volunteering for Duke of Edinburgh?
It’s about choosing to give time to help people, the community or society, the environment or animals. Your volunteering must not be done for a business but can be undertaken for a charity or not-for-profit organisation.
Do you need permission to litter pick UK?
Avoid litter picking on private land as you need permission from the landowner first. Litter on private land is the responsibility of the landowner to dispose of. Wherever possible, stick to public land for your litter picks.
What can I do for my DofE volunteering?

How many hours of volunteering are needed for DofE?
As a rule of thumb, a three month section equates to at least 13 hours of activity, six months to 26 hours and 12 months to 52 hours.
Are you allowed your phone for DofE?
Can I bring my mobile phone? Yes – but it should only be used in case of an emergency.
Should I mention DofE in a CV?
– Work experience – where possible, make each one relevant to the role you’re applying for, listing your achievements and responsibilities. – Qualifications – as well as your academic qualifications, remember to include your DofE Award.
Can I litter pick on my own?
You can litter pick where the public have a right of entry and where it is safe, you cannot litter pick on any private property unless you have the land owner’s permission.
Is litter picking a hobby?
One of the fastest growing hobbies since the start of the pandemic has been litter picking.
Is dropping litter illegal?
It is a criminal offence to drop litter on the street or in a public area. If you are caught dropping litter then you may be given a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN).
Can a 13 year old work in a charity shop?
The CRA is not currently aware of any by-laws which restrict employment of children in charity shops, outside of the national restrictions above. Some members have asked about the work permits which under 16s need to acquire before they can work in shops.
Can I use the gym as a DofE?
Yes. Some participants may want to use this section to help motivate them to lose weight or simply to get fitter. This would still usually be though a specific activity, but could also be through a mix, for example jogging, gym, tennis and Zumba. If go-karting is a skill, why isn’t sailing?
Can you take alcohol on DofE?
Participants are not allowed to bring or consume any form of alcohol on any DofE activity. Any participants caught breaking this rule may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Is Silver DofE harder than bronze?
It was so much easier than bronze because you do know what to expect and you’ve done it before and you can just get on with it better. It was much more enjoyable and one extra day camping isn’t even that bad!!
Does Gaming count as a skill in DofE?
Historically the DofE has not recognised playing computer games as a Skills section activity. However, the landscape of gaming has changed dramatically since this guidance was originally written, and now incorporates an organised and competitive scene that directly links to the aims and outcomes of the Skills section.
Do jobs care about DofE?
Employers tell us that they look out for DofE Awards when they recruit – deeming extra-curricular activities which develop soft skills to be just as important as academic achievements – so we encourage you to include your Award on your CV and job applications as well if you’re looking to work whilst at university.
How heavy should your DofE backpack be?
The first thing to do is look at the DofE Expedition Kit List and decide what’s essential and what items you could remove. For expeditions on foot, rucksacks shouldn’t weigh more than 25% of your body weight and all rucksacks must be weighed before departure.
How far is DofE Bronze walk?

How far do you walk on DofE? The distance you walk per day on DofE varies between awards. A standard distance to walk is 16km per day on Bronze, 19km per day on Silver, and 23km per day on Gold.
Can I wear leggings on DofE?
– Examples of what to wear include tracksuits and jogging bottoms and tights and leggings (good for hot and cold weather), thermals (good for campsite but not when hiking).
Can I wear jeans on DofE?
Remember – avoid cotton and denim! They let heat escape, get heavy when wet and dry slowly, so no jeans or joggers. All Duke of Edinburgh’s Award recommended technical clothing is breathable and lightweight.
