Our recycling centres are available on an appointment only basis for cars, bicycles and vans. This provides a faster experience with fewer queues and and less crowding. You should read all the information below before booking an appointment. If you turn up without a booking you cannot enter the site.
Do I have to book a slot at my local tip?
To visit one of our household waste recycling centres (HWRC) you must book a slot in advance.
Are the tips open in Edinburgh?
Our Recycling centres are open. Our recycling centres are available for those who have booked appointments only. This means there’s fewer queues on site and on surrounding roads, an overall faster experience for all and it’s less crowded so people can move around more easily. What can I take to recycling Centre Edinburgh?
The following items can be accepted at recycling centres, although they may be in different skips or locations to the previous layout:
- garden waste: flowers, plants, garden weeds, grass clippings, hedge trimmings and leaves.
- bricks, rubble and loose soil.
- solid wood.
- MDF and laminates.
- household batteries.
- vehicle batteries.
How does recycling work in Edinburgh?
Our mixed recycling bins collect clean paper, card, cans and tins, and plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays. These are sorted at Biffa’s sorting plant at Broxburn and sold to the different reprocessors.
Can I take a bed to the local tip?
Take your mattress to the local tip
If you have a vehicle large enough to transport your mattress, you can take the mattress to the tip. However, it may just end up as a landfill, so you may prefer to pay up and let the council collect the mattress, or you might wish to take the mattress to a recycling centre.
Do local tips take sofas?
Most tips or Local Recycling Centres, as they’re officially known, will happily accept your sofa and, where possible, will recycle or reuse as much of the sofa as possible.
Can you take pots and pans to the tip?
Pots and pans can’t be recycled from home, but if they’re in good condition, you can donate them to charity or pass them on using platforms like Olio, Freecycle or Gumtree, to name just a few. If they’re beyond use, recycle them at your local household waste recycling centre.
Which bin do clothes go in Scotland?
Please place all items loose in the bin – do not put them inside bags. Items must be clean, dry and loose. Please remove lids.
What can I put in my food waste bin Edinburgh?

Can you put shredded paper in recycling Edinburgh?
City of Edinburgh Council kerbside recycling service accepts many types of packaging. In the Green bin you can recycle tins, cans, paper, cardboard, envelopes, shredded paper, plastic bottles and bottle tops, pots, tubs and trays- put the items in loose, do not use plastic or black bags.
How do I dispose of a duvet in Edinburgh?
Bedding (including duvets, blankets, pillows)
- First, does your duvet or pillow actually need to be replaced?
- Bedding can be taken to Textile Recycling Points (no duvets or pillows) (W: www.recycleforscotland.com) or placed into the textile bag in the Edinburgh kerbside collection.
Can you put drinking glasses in blue bin?
Glass bottles and jars
metal lids can be placed in your blue recycling bin separately for recycling. Glasses (spectacles) Reading/vision glasses only. Not drinking glasses. No cases.

Can bubble wrap be recycled in Edinburgh?
Our collection services
Please don’t put bags, wrappers, toys or any other type of plastic in your bin. Our contractor recycles these in their own recycling plants in England. Anything they can’t recycle is turned into fuel.
Can you recycle tin foil in Edinburgh?
Green wheelie bins, green lidded communal bins and red boxes* are for recycling paper, plastics, cans, cardboard and foil. (*Red boxes are only available to certain properties in the city centre).
How can I get rid of my mattress for free?
Consider these options:
- Take the mattress to a recycling centre.
- Donate the mattress to charity.
- Hire a mattress removal service.
- Contact your local council.
- Buy a new mattress that comes with a disposal service.
Can you take duvets and pillows to the tip?
Aside from the take back scheme below, duvets and pillows are generally not recyclable and should be disposed of in the waste bin or at a Recycling Centre. However, some animal charities may be able to use these items for bedding – check locally.
Can I put a mattress in a skip UK?
Bear in mind though that skip companies normally charge extra for a mattress (around £10 – £25) and some prohibit you from putting them in the skip altogether – so it’s best to double-check with the skip hire company before you use it. Can I throw a sofa in a skip?
Sofas – Sofas can be safely placed in your skip once you have no use for them. Furniture – Wooden, plastic and metal furniture can all be placed in your skip. Batteries – These contain metals and chemicals which are hazardous and should not be placed in a skip.
