What should you not take on DofE?
Dense, filling food such as nuts, sweets and dried meat are ideal for DofE. Avoid all canned goods, items packaged in glass, or food that requires refrigeration. You should also bear in mind that some foods release energy slowly, and others quickly.
What do you wear to DofE?
All Duke of Edinburgh’s Award recommended technical clothing is breathable and lightweight, including walking trousers. It’s designed for a specific role and layer. You will be walking in the countryside, up hills, and in all weathers so your trousers must be flexible. Remember, no jeans or joggers.
What do you sleep in at DofE?
All Duke of Edinburgh’s Award recommended sleeping bags are snug ‘mummy’ shape for outdoor use, with compression sacks to pack small. A 3-season bag should be fine for any Award level. Sleeping mats give you extra insulation and comfort when camping.
What do I need to bring for DofE?

How do I deal with my period on DofE?
So, here are some hints and tips to help you get the most out of the DofE experience, despite your period.
- Plan ahead. Work out the days of your expedition and when your period is due.
- Be prepared. What does that mean?
- Bring a small flannel skirt.
- Drink lots of water.
- Factor in timings.
- Food is important.
- Sleep is your friend.
Do you shower on DofE?
Will I be able to shower? No – most of the campsites do not have showers. You will be able to wash, athough there is unlikely to be hot water. We suggest either bringing a flannel and small bar of soap or using wet wipes.
Are you allowed phones in DofE?
While useful additional safety tools, and in many cases a useful means of capturing evidence, the DofE strongly recommends that mobile phones be used for emergencies only.
Can you wear leggings for DofE?
– Examples of what to wear include tracksuits and jogging bottoms and tights and leggings (good for hot and cold weather), thermals (good for campsite but not when hiking).
How heavy should my DofE bag be?
around 15kg
As a guide you should be aiming for a fully packed rucksack with group kit, personal kit, food and water to weigh around 15kg. The lighter your bag is, the more you will enjoy your expedition. If your bag is too heavy you will struggle to lift it let alone walk with it for hours.
Can boys and girls sleep in the same tent on DofE?
DofE recommended tents come in different sizes and layouts, for groups of two to four people, and are suitable for sleeping either mixed groups or just boys or girls.
How much weight do you carry on DofE?
We recommend carrying no more than 25% of your body weight on expedition. Think about how long your expedition is and how much you will be carrying.
How many miles do you walk for bronze DofE?
How far do you walk on DofE? The distance you walk per day on DofE varies between awards. A standard distance to walk is 16km per day on Bronze, 19km per day on Silver, and 23km per day on Gold.
Can you take cheese on DofE?
Snacks are really important to refuel your energy levels and give you a little treat when you are on an expedition. Pack something salty like salted nuts or processed (non refrigerated) cheese as you will lose a lot of salt as you sweat.
Can you take alcohol on DofE?
Participants are not allowed to bring or consume any form of alcohol on any DofE activity. Any participants caught breaking this rule may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
How long do de periods last?
Your period can last between 3 and 8 days, but it will usually last for about 5 days. The bleeding tends to be heaviest in the first 2 days. When your period is at its heaviest, the blood will be red. On lighter days, it may be pink, brown or black.
How many hours is 6 months of DofE?

As a rule of thumb, a three month section equates to at least 13 hours of activity, six months to 26 hours and 12 months to 52 hours.
Should I go to A and E with heavy period?
If you need to change your tampon or pad after less than 2 hours or you pass clots the size of a quarter or larger, that is heavy bleeding. If you have this type of bleeding, you should see a doctor. Untreated heavy or prolonged bleeding can stop you from living your life to the fullest. It also can cause anemia.
Do schools care about DofE?
A DofE Award is not just a prestigious Award much desired by colleges, universities, and employers. It’s recognition of the huge effort you’ve put in to doing it, the people you’ve helped and the skills you’ve learnt along the way.
Do you have to cook on DofE?
You’ll need to cook a hot meal during your DofE expedition and show you can use a cooking stove or ‘camp craft’ effectively in the outdoors. Can you do litter picking for DofE volunteering?
Litter picking is recognised as a volunteering activity for the programme as part of ‘working with the environment’.
