The Silver DofE programme has four sections: Volunteering, Physical, Skills and Expedition. You need to do at least six months Volunteering and a minimum of six months on either Physical or Skills and three months on the other.

What do you have to do in DofE?
They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity. Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background or location.
Can you fail DofE?
You cannot fail a DofE Expedition. However at the end of a practice expedition we occasionally have to recommend that some groups undertake further training and practice to ensure that they are fully prepared to safely undertake an unaccompanied qualifying expedition.
Can a 13 year old do DofE?

Does going to the gym count for DofE?
From yoga to going to the gym, skateboarding to wheelchair tennis — almost any dance, sport or fitness activity can count. And doing more physical activity can help support mental health. Young people can join a team or do it on their own — it’s up to them!
How many hours is 6 months of DofE?

As a rule of thumb, a three month section equates to at least 13 hours of activity, six months to 26 hours and 12 months to 52 hours.
Can you smoke on DofE?
The use of bongs, hookahs, or similar or associated items, for the purpose of smoking flavoured tobacco or other substances, is strictly prohibited. Any participant contravening this rule may be excluded from the remainder of the DofE training or Expedition.
Does walking count for DofE?
There are several activities that could be considered which while physical, may not be strenuous. For example, yoga, Alexander technique, T’ai Chi, archery, bowling, walking and Pétanque.
How long is DofE Bronze walk?
How far do you walk on DofE? The distance you walk per day on DofE varies between awards. A standard distance to walk is 16km per day on Bronze, 19km per day on Silver, and 23km per day on Gold.
Is Bronze DofE hard?
Participants need to be 14 for bronze level, 15 for silver and 16 – 24yrs for the gold level. It is a rigorous, challenging award and hard work, with strong commitment required to complete all levels. Having said that you can just ‘go for gold’ if preferred, which seems to be a popular route today.
Can you take cheese on DofE?
Snacks are really important to refuel your energy levels and give you a little treat when you are on an expedition. Pack something salty like salted nuts or processed (non refrigerated) cheese as you will lose a lot of salt as you sweat.
DofE recommended tents come in different sizes and layouts, for groups of two to four people, and are suitable for sleeping either mixed groups or just boys or girls.
Is DofE free?
There may be additional costs for activities and Licensed Organisations that run the DofE, such as schools, may add a small fee to cover administration costs etc. If a school, club or other operator charges you more than this, it is because they include additional costs to them, such as transport or expedition etc.
Do schools care about DofE?
A DofE Award is not just a prestigious Award much desired by colleges, universities, and employers. It’s recognition of the huge effort you’ve put in to doing it, the people you’ve helped and the skills you’ve learnt along the way.
Is Silver DofE harder than bronze?
It was so much easier than bronze because you do know what to expect and you’ve done it before and you can just get on with it better. It was much more enjoyable and one extra day camping isn’t even that bad!!
How much weight do you carry on DofE?
We recommend carrying no more than 25% of your body weight on expedition. Think about how long your expedition is and how much you will be carrying.
How many km do you walk on DofE?
Get out and about: Walk at least 30 km to support young people through their DofE. You can cover your 30km in a week or set your own time frame (whatever challenges you!). We suggest that you walk at least 30km but feel free to walk, run, cycle or swim the distance!

CAN YOU DO year 9 DofE?
There are 3 levels; Bronze, Silver and Gold. The Bronze Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is now open to all Year 9 students to enrol, the DofE Award Manager will be attending the Year 9 school assembly on the 13 November to promote the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award to all the Year 9 students.
Do you need Pyjamas for DofE?
Do you REALLY NEED it? Nightwear – Pyjamas or cotton top and bottoms, preferably NOT a onesie as they are bulky and once wet are hard to dry. Trainers or Sandals – Optional for use at campsite.
