Joining the Library Membership of Glasgow Libraries is free and open to all. You can join at any one of our venues by completing a membership application form either online or in person.

We need your residential address. (If you are planning to visit us to get a library card you will need to bring evidence of your address. Please see Evidence of identity and address for more information.) The Library will only contact you, if necessary, regarding your use of the Library or your library card.

If you visit your local library, to join please bring with you one form of ID that shows your current name and address, for example, a bank statement or bill.

You must bring identification with your name and address on it such as a driving licence, bank statement or recent utility bill. There is a charge of £1.20 for replacing lost or damaged library cards.
Can you just walk into a library?
You can walk in and browse through and use the books and most materials at any public library (at least in the United States). It is not necessary to make an appointment.

Can anyone access the Reading Rooms? Yes, you just need a Reader Pass to use the British Library Reading Rooms. Getting a Reader Pass is free and enables you to request items from our collection to view in the Reading Rooms.
Can you just walk in the British Library?
Everyone is welcome to visit our exhibition galleries and public spaces. To use the Reading Rooms at St Pancras and Boston Spa you will need to register for a Reader Pass.
Do you need qualifications to be a library assistant?
For some assistant jobs, for example in industrial or commercial libraries, you may need qualifications at A level standard or higher. You may also need specialist knowledge like languages or science, depending on the job.
Can you nap in a library?
Many libraries do allow people to sleep during hours the building is open, as long as they’re quiet and respectful and don’t disturb other patrons with loud snoring, Policies vary, though, and some libraries don’t allow it.
Is it allowed to sleep in library?
Smoking, eating, sleeping and talking loudly are strictly prohibited in the Library. Non-members can use the library resources in the Library premises with the permission of the Director General/ Joint secretary /Librarian.
What can you not do in a library?
You should not make unnecessary noises, disturb other library users, damage library materials, or make unnecessary noises. Similar to the previous, we should plan ahead, follow library signs and ask for help when using computers. We should also avoid writing in library books.
Can I use a University Library if I’m not a student?
Mar 10, 2022 8229. You don’t need to be a member of the Library to come and browse books or infrequently access our online resources from within any of our libraries. If you want to borrow physical books or regularly use Library computers to access online databases, then you would need to become a member.
Can non uni students go to uni library?
Qualifying UCL alumni and visitors can use UCL libraries, but must complete an online registration form before visiting.
