Completing your journey Elizabeth line customers will initially need to touch out and in again when switching between Elizabeth line trains at Paddington and Liverpool Street.
What happens if you forget to tap out at train station?
Remember, you need a different card or device for each person travelling. If you touch-in but don’t touch-out at your destination stop, with the same card or device, we won’t know what journey you made. If this happens, you’ll automatically pay the incomplete journey fare.
Can you tap in at Liverpool Street?
For this to work correctly, you must touch in at Liverpool Street when you start your journey. If you have not touched in at the start of your journey, the system will charge you the maximum single fare when you touch out.
Do I need to tap between overground and tube?
If you are transferring from the Overground to the Tube or vice versa, make sure you tap on and tap off when transferring for your trip to be considered a single journey. Note that transfers to National Rail (not to be confused with Overground) will be considered a new trip.
Do I get charged if I tap in and out at the same station?
You can get a refund if you have been charged for touching in and out at the same station without making a journey.
Do you have to tap in and out when changing trains?

When changing trains you may need to touch your card on a PINK reader, and if you are travelling on a bus or tram you only have to touch in. If you don’t touch in and out on every journey you make we don’t know where you have travelled, so we can’t charge the right fare.
Should I tap when I get on and off a bus?
There’s no need to ask the driver for a ticket; just tap when you get on and off the bus and make sure you tap the same contactless card or device each time.

What happens if I only tap once for the underground?
Please wait at least 48 hours as you might receive an automatic refund: Oyster – we’ll automatically add it to your card the next time you touch in or out of a rail journey. Contactless – the refund will show on your next card statement, or we will adjust the fares charged when you next travel.
What happens if you forget to tap out TfL?
If you don’t touch in and out, we can’t tell where you’ve travelled from or to, so your journey will be incomplete. Maximum fares don’t count towards capping. If you don’t touch in, you may be charged a penalty fare.
Can I just tap my card on the tube?
If your bank card shows the contactless payment symbol, you can use it to pay as you go straight away. You’ll pay an adult rate fare.
Can you tap your debit card on the train?
Contactless pay as you go (PAYG)
Just touch your debit or credit card on a yellow card reader to pay for your journey, the same as you would with your Oyster card, and you won’t have to queue for tickets at the station and won’t have to top up. Always remember to touch in and out.
How do you pay for the Overground?
You can pay as you go using contactless (card or device), an Oyster card or a Visitor Oyster card. It also offers great value as pay as you go is cheaper than buying single tickets and you get daily and weekly capping.
What happens if you don’t tap off go?
If you forget to tap off at the end of your trip, an amount for Missed Tap Off or Underpayment will be deducted from your PRESTO card at the start of your next trip in the GO network.
What happens if you tap twice at the same station?
If you tap in at a station, you can’t pass your oyster card back to your mate behind, the system won’t accept two consecutive tap ins. However, it WILL accept them if the two are broken up by a tap out. So to discourage that, there’s a hefty fee involved with doing so.

Can I get off at a different train station?
Yes, you can break your journey while travelling with an Anytime Single or Return ticket. This means you can get off the train at any connecting stop and leave the station, before boarding a later train to complete your journey.

What happens if I forget to tap off? You will be charged the single fare to the end of the route, so always remember to tap off in order to pay the correct fare.
Do you have to tap your debit card when leaving a bus?
Tap your contactless debit/credit card on the yellow card reader when you get on the bus. You don’t need to tap your card when you get off.

Buses, coaches and trams must indicate and wait for traffic before pulling out just like the rest of us.
Where do you tap off on a bus?
Simply TAP ON using the driver’s ticket machine at the start of each journey and TAP OFF at the end of each journey on the tap off reader located by the exit door, using a contactless payment method (Visa/Mastercard payment card or device using Apple Pay or Android Pay).
