Can I use my debit card on the tram?
Ticket machines are located at each tram stop. Simply follow the instructions on the touch screen and pay by either cash, card, Apple pay or Google pay.
Do I tap in and out on trams?
Always touch in on a yellow card reader at the start of your journey and touch out at the end to pay the right fare. (On a bus or tram you only need to touch in.)
How much does a UK tram cost?
Pay as you go at adult rate on buses and trams and our Hopper fare gives you unlimited journeys for £1.65, made within one hour of touching in. Hopper fare also applies to discounted rate travel. Touch in using the same card or device on all journeys and you get our Hopper fare automatically.
Can you use contactless card on tram?
You can travel by tram with contactless cards and devices using the smart readers (adult fares apply) Travel and pay as you go with contactless.
Is it cheaper to buy a ticket or use contactless?
You can add money to an Oyster card or use contactless (card or device) straight away. You only pay for the journeys you make and it’s cheaper than buying a paper single or return ticket (train companies may offer special deals on some journeys).
Is it cheaper to use contactless or Travelcard?
As a general rule a Travelcard is more expensive than an Oyster card or Contactless payment card. The exception is if you make 3 or more journeys for 6 days or more within a 7 day period. In this case a 7 day Travelcard works out cheaper than an Oyster or Contactless payment card.
How do you tap on trams?
If you’re using a contactless card, device or Oyster card, you’ll need to touch in on the yellow card reader on the tram platform before boarding. Our Hopper fare lets you take unlimited pay as you go tram and bus journeys, within one hour of touching in on your first tram or bus, for £1.50.
Do you need to tap off on trams?
You don’t need to touch off. If you’re just travelling in the city’s Free Tram Zone, don’t touch on or off. If you’re just travelling in Zone 2, touch on and off for a cheaper fare.
What happens if you tap in twice?
If you tap in at a station, you can’t pass your oyster card back to your mate behind, the system won’t accept two consecutive tap ins. However, it WILL accept them if the two are broken up by a tap out. So to discourage that, there’s a hefty fee involved with doing so.
How do you travel on a tram in the UK?
You can buy tickets from the conductor on the tram, on the My Metro App or use a Swift pay as you go card. Tram stops are in four ticket zones (Metro Ticket Zones 1-4). The zones you can travel between are based on your ticket. You can find what zones your stops are in on our online service.
How do trams work UK?
Tram vehicles are usually lighter and shorter than main line and rapid transit trains. Today, most trams use electrical power, usually fed by a pantograph sliding on an overhead line; older systems may use a trolley pole or a bow collector. In some cases, a contact shoe on a third rail is used.

With shops and stores across the UK accepting contactless payments up to £100, tap and pay is the safest way to make your daily purchases. The £100 limit may not be available across all retailers immediately.
