You either get charged the maximum journey charge from where you touched in, or you get charged about what it would have cost had you done it right. It depends on whether you touch in at another place nearby soon after, or whether you could have gone all over the network before the next touch in.
What happens if you forget to tap out train?
If you touch-in but don’t touch-out at your destination stop, with the same card or device, we won’t know what journey you made. If this happens, you’ll automatically pay the incomplete journey fare.
What happens if you don’t tap out overground?
If you don’t touch in and out, we can’t tell where you’ve travelled from or to, so your journey will be incomplete. Maximum fares don’t count towards capping.
Do I need to tap when changing to overground?
If you’re travelling across London but not through Zone 1, you need to: Touch in on a yellow card reader at the start of your journey. Touch on a pink card reader when you change trains. Touch out on a yellow card reader at the end of your journey.

Can I take a later train if I miss mine?
You can board the next available train using your existing ticket.
Are there ticket inspectors on overground?
A RPI will always provide their badge number as ID when requesting to see a ticket. On Trams, DLR and London Overground, the service operators hire their own inspectors, so they are not employed by TfL.
Can TfL inspectors check contactless?

Is the Overground the same price as the Tube?
London Overground rail fares cost the same as Underground prices on Oyster, as the service also uses the TfL zone price range, making managing your travel costs much easier. Peak times on the Overground are also the same, with prices rising between 06:30 and 09:30 am, with a reduced cost thereafter.
Does the Overground count as a Tube?

If you do not tap on, you may be fined for travelling without a valid ticket. If you do not tap on but do tap off at the end, you will be charged the default fare. If you tap on at the beginning and then forget to tap off at the end of your trip, you will be charged the default fare for an incomplete trip.
What happens if you dont have enough money for TfL?
You may be able to complete your journey, but your card will then be temporarily stopped and you won’t be able to use it to make any further journeys until the outstanding amount is paid to TfL.

It’s to stop people gaming the system. If you tap in at a station, you can’t pass your oyster card back to your mate behind, the system won’t accept two consecutive tap ins. However, it WILL accept them if the two are broken up by a tap out.
What to do if I missed the train?

You have to buy another reserved ticket if available to travel in reserved coaches. You may get refund from railways by filing TDR (ticket deposit receipt) as per extant rules citing reasons for not travelling.
Can I get a later train with my ticket?
You can only take the train that you have reserved i.e. the one which you have been issued a ticket for. If you wish to depart earlier or later, you can exchange your ticket or cancel it and re-book it, depending on the fare conditions. Once you have done this, you can then choose a new departure time for your ticket.
