After World War II, Newport took on a more active combat role. The U.S. Atlantic Fleet Cruiser-Destroyer Force was based in Newport from 1962 until the early 1970s, when it was relocated to Norfolk, Virginia. The fleet’s departure plunged Newport into one of its darkest economic periods.
Welcome to Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport—home to 50 Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and US Army Reserve commands and activities. From its infancy during the Revolutionary War to its present day sophistication, the United States Navy has been an integral part of Narragansett Bay.
In 1989 the base was added to the National Priorities List, after contamination had been discovered years earlier. Newport now maintains inactive ships at its pier facilities, along with the United States Coast Guard.

After Navy A School, sailors traditionally are given 10 days of leave. After their 10 days of leave, they will check into their new unit at their first duty station. Sailors with overseas duty stations may receive more than 10 days of leave before having to report to their next unit.
In all the branches’ basic training programs, bedtime is usually 2100, or 9 p.m., except during times of special events, such as night exercises. In basic training, lights out means go to sleep. It does not mean talk to your buddies, study or write a letter home.
