Referral process
Each food bank works with different frontline professionals, like doctors, health visitors, social workers, and Citizens Advice. These professionals will be able to refer you to a food bank and give you a food bank voucher if they think you need emergency food.

How many times can you use a food bank?
How many times can I visit a food bank? You can normally get up to four food bank vouchers issued, as it’s meant to be a short-term solution.
How do I qualify for food bank UK?

What is a food grant?
Food grants are provided for under section 11.2 of the Special Needs Grants Programmes. The amount and frequency of grants are limited unless the Chief Executive of Work and Income considers that there are “exceptional circumstances”.
Can you get a food grant without being on the benefit?
You don’t have to be on a benefit to qualify for this help. You don’t have to pay the money back.
Can I get help with food on Universal Credit?
A Universal Credit Contingency Fund short-term living expenses grant can help with the cost of living (for example, to buy food, toiletries or cleaning materials or to top up your fuel meter) if you are in financial difficulty while you are waiting for your first full Universal Credit award to be paid.

If you cannot afford to buy food you can visit your normal support service to request a food bank voucher. They will discuss your circumstances with you, and if appropriate will issue you an electronic voucher code to bring to the foodbank to exchange for an emergency food parcel.

The nationwide scheme now allows customers to easily pick up a pack at the beginning of their shop, which is set aside after they’ve paid at the till for volunteers to deliver to a local food bank.
