How long is the M6 going to be closed for?
Overnight closures until 28 October 2022. We’re continuing our works around the M6 junction 10 roundabout and some of the connecting roads. This work will require some overnight closures, more details can be found below.
Why is the M6 closed at junction 26?
The M6 will be closed to southbound drivers for three nights while a 10-mile section of the motorway is upgraded to an ‘all-lane running’ smart motorway. National Highways will be starting to install gantries between junctions 23 (Haydock Island) and 26 (Orrell Interchange) of the M6 this month (September 2022).

As part of the M6 junction 19 improvement project we are building new link roads through the junction to improve connectivity between the M6 and A556. Once the new link roads are open, we’ll need to reduce the speed limit on the M6 exit slip roads to 40mph.
