The Day Surgery Unit is located on the ground floor of University Hospital, Coventry. It can be found inbetween our Outpatients area and Endoscopy.
What is a day surgery unit?
Patients are referred to this unit for minor surgery and investigative procedures. These are performed under general or local anaesthetic, and patients are discharged from hospital the same day of surgery.
What is Ward 42 at UHCW?
Ward 42 is a Neurology Ward, comprising of 36 acute beds. 7 of those beds are Stroke beds. If you are a stroke patient, a member of the team will discuss your discharge options with you.

We look after patients with various conditions but Ward 20 specialises in the Care of Older People. Although the ward is mixed sex, men and women are cared for in separate bays which are single sex. As well as bays of beds, we also have some side rooms with ensuite facilities.

We are a Stroke Unit with 43 beds for hyper acute and acute patients. Initially, patients are admitted to the Hyper-Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), which is based on Ward 41, and you will be under the care of the stroke consultant on call.

Day surgery is surgery that is completed in one day, and does not require the person to stay in hospital overnight.
Can I drive myself home after day surgery?
No. Because you will be given an anaesthetic, driving home is not an option. Please arrange for a family member, friend or another responsible adult to accompany you home.
How long are you in recovery room after day surgery?
How long do I stay in the recovery room? You may stay in the the recovery room for several hours or overnight, depending on the care you need. The time that you need to stay depends on your health and how you recover from the anesthetic. When your condition is stable, you will be taken to the nursing unit.
Do you wear undies in surgery?
In most cases, you only wear your underwear underneath your gown when you have a surgical procedure. When you arrive at the hospital or outpatient facility, your nurse will tell you what clothes you can keep on under your gown, depending on your surgical site.
What can you not do on day of surgery?
Bathe or shower the day of surgery. Do not wear makeup, lotion, powder, deodorant or nail polish. It is important to remove your nail polish so that the doctors and nurses can see your true color during the surgery and in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit.
