Tap on, tap off bus tickets have been introduced on First York services. Passengers will be able to buy tickets by tapping their contactless cards or smartphones on a reader as they board, and again when they exit.
Can you pay contactless on York buses?
Contactless payment is available to pay on first York buses (about 90% of York’s buses).
Can you pay with card on York bus?
How do I use the card? Simply tap your card on the ticket machine when you board the bus. The ticket machine will read the card and confirm to the driver that you have a valid ticket for your journey. Please make sure your card is loaded with a valid ticket before you board the bus.

Do East Yorkshire buses take card?
Wherever possible, please have the correct money for your fare, as this reduces the amount of time the bus has to spend at your stop, and helps keep the service on time. However, we do give change, when available, and you can also pay using your contactless card or Google Pay/Apple Pay on all our buses.
Why did first bus only charge me 10p?
This is because the total amount owed for your travel is unknown at that moment. In a few days, you will be charged the full amount with the 10p being updated to the actual amount owed on the same authorisation. To learn more about card transactions, click here.

What happens if I forget to tap off the bus?
What happens if I forget to tap off? You will be charged the single fare to the end of the route, so always remember to tap off in order to pay the correct fare.
Why does my contactless not work on bus?
Some of the reasons why a card may not work include: The card is outside of the validity dates i.e. expired. The card is not a contactless card. The card is not accepted e.g. American Express.
What happens if you don’t tap out with contactless?
If you don’t touch in and out, we can’t tell where you’ve travelled from or to, so your journey will be incomplete. Maximum fares don’t count towards capping.
How do I use a TAP card on my phone?
- In the TAP app, sign in or create a TAP account.
- In the Cards section, press (“add card” icon) in the top left.
- Press “Add a TAP Card on Your Phone.”
- Follow the prompts to add Stored Value or a pass to your card and complete payment.
Can I pay with Apple Pay on the bus?

With Express Mode for Apple Pay, just tap the blue card reader with your device (iPhone or Apple Watch) when boarding the bus. There is no need to wake or unlock the device, open an app or use Face ID or Touch ID, easy and quick!

Make sure your device is turned on (it doesn’t need to be connected to the internet). As you approach a fare gate or board a bus, do one of the following: On an iPhone with Face ID: Double-click the side button, then glance at iPhone to authenticate with Face ID, or enter your passcode.

Can I use my concessionary bus pass in Yorkshire?
We allow free travel to passholders of the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme on our buses. We run buses all over Lancashire, Yorkshire and Greater Manchester, and the times you can use your pass are slightly different for each area.
Is not paying for bus a crime?
Fare evasion is a criminal offence and you may be prosecuted. We have more Revenue Inspectors across our transport services working to reduce fare evasion.
