The 3 Peaks Challenge in the UK is a hiking adventure that most people can do with a little bit of training. It can be done either in under 24 hours (that’s the real challenge!) or leisurely at your own pace.

Can you do the 3 peaks in trainers?
The straight answer to this is no! The reason is that whilst trainers and approach shoes (like a trainer but with an aggressive sole) are adequate for lower-level terrain in dry conditions they lack sufficient ankle support for the terrain you will encounter on this Challenge.

How fit do you need to be to do National 3 peaks?
To test yourself, try walking around 10 miles first over relatively flat ground. If you can’t manage that, you will be unlikely to be able to ascend Ben Nevis and come down safely. Ideally, you want to be able to consistently walk c. 12 miles over hills to be able to take on the challenge with a degree of comfort.

With complete rest your muscles will recover in 3 to 7 days, but some gentle exercise to keep you moving is recommended for a quicker recovery – so a low level walk on the flat, or exploring some of the scenic sites is a good way to start the healing process.
